Choosing a Walt Disney World Deluxe Resort is less about finding one hotel that is “best” for everyone and more about deciding which atmosphere, location and transportation options fit your vacation. In the video above, I share the three resorts that stand out most to me: Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, Disney’s Wilderness Lodge and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.
I’ve stayed across every Disney Resort hotel category and return to Walt Disney World many, many times. These are personal favorites—not a promise that one choice will be right for every family. Here is how I would think through them when comparing an eligible Disney-property vacation.
Grand Floridian: classic elegance and easy Magic Kingdom access
Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is Walt Disney World’s flagship resort, and its Victorian-inspired setting feels special from the moment you arrive. In my video, I highlight the beautiful grounds, attentive service and broad mix of table-service and quick-service dining.
Location is the biggest practical advantage. Disney currently lists a walking path, monorail, watercraft and bus options from the resort. Magic Kingdom is one monorail stop away, and guests can also walk there on a path of less than one mile. That flexibility can be especially useful when Magic Kingdom is a major priority.
It may be a strong fit if: you value an elegant atmosphere, want several dining choices close by and expect to spend meaningful time at Magic Kingdom.
Wilderness Lodge: immersive theming with a relaxed feel
Disney’s Wilderness Lodge is my second choice. Its Pacific Northwest-inspired design is warm, dramatic and wonderfully removed from the energy of the parks, even though Magic Kingdom is accessible by boat.
I especially enjoy the pools, the setting and the food. Transportation to other destinations is generally by bus, so it is worth weighing the peaceful resort experience against the routes you expect to use most often.
It may be a strong fit if: you love rustic, nature-forward theming, want a calmer home base and like having boat transportation to Magic Kingdom.
Animal Kingdom Lodge: a destination of its own
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is my honorable mention. The resort’s savanna views and animal-observation areas create an experience unlike any other Disney Resort hotel. You do not need a savanna-view room to enjoy animal viewing; there are shared observation areas around the resort.
The tradeoff is transportation. Bus service is the primary option to the theme parks and Disney Springs, and the resort is not walkable to Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park. For some families, the atmosphere is more than worth it. For others, location may carry more weight.
It may be a strong fit if: the resort experience itself is a major part of your vacation and your family would enjoy the animals, distinctive design and acclaimed dining nearby.
How I would narrow the choice
- Start with your park priorities. Grand Floridian and Wilderness Lodge both offer convenient ways to reach Magic Kingdom, while Animal Kingdom Lodge is a more secluded retreat.
- Think about your preferred pace. Decide whether you want polished elegance, a rustic escape or a resort that feels like its own destination.
- Compare the exact room and offer available for your dates. Rates and eligible promotions change. A resort that is outside the budget one week may compare differently for another set of dates.
- Choose the resort you will actually enjoy using. If you plan afternoon breaks, pool time or resort meals, the hotel’s atmosphere and amenities matter even more.
